Deep Breaths and Thankfulness

Yesterday, I finally started taking some relaxed breaths since news of the Boston Marathon bombings first surfaced last Monday. Even after Dzokhar Tsarnaev was apprehended on Friday, I let out a huge sigh of relief, then started yelling as I shouted my thanks at every official cop car, ambulance, motorcycle and flashing light that drove through Watertown Square. It reminded me of the primal scream done during exams when I was a student at Boston College. But instead of having to hunker back down into the frustration of studying afterwards, my words simply flew away on the breeze along with...

The Cable Free Experiment – Part Two

“Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone…” prophetic words from Joni Mitchell which sum up the past month as we went cable free. Last time I tagged in, it was the beginning of the experiment. I thought I knew what my watching habits were and thought that doing without cable for a month wouldn’t be so bad. It wasn’t total agony. Christophe had invested in this gadget called the Roku box. It connects directly to your router and streams internet channels to your tv. As I’ve spoken to folks over the month, more people had this technology...

My (hopefully) Funny Valentine

My (hopefully) Funny Valentine

Last week, I watched my sister, Christine, put together some simple Valentines for her younger daughter’s class. The holiday hadn’t really been on my radar screen, but watching her patiently write the kids’ names in glitter started me thinking about Valentine’s Day in general. It made me think of being a little person myself, taping a decorated paper lunch bag to the back of my chair. It made me think of my dad’s common refrain on that day: “Why do you need a special day to show love? You should show love every day.” (where was Pinterest at that time?) I thought about the first...

The Cable Free Experiment

Last week, Christophe asked me about going without cable for a month, as an experiment. Out of the two of us, I definitely watch more television so the thought made me a little uneasy. As we talked more about it, though, I began to ask myself, “how much tv do I watch?” and “how do I watch tv these days?” For the most part, I’ve always had some form of cable and liked seeing things when they happened. So I would race home or move things around so that I could watch award shows or early seasons of “LOST.” I barely knew how to program my VCR to record (I know…my roots are...

Here’s to 2013

I woke up this morning and realized that we’re almost halfway through the month. It doesn’t feel like that much time has passed since the first week of the year was spent dealing with the brunt of the flu. I had hoped to start the year off running. There were parties that would allow me to see friends, a decent work schedule planned, and other appointments that are best done as early in the year as possible. But, alas, all these plans had to be reshuffled and this past week has been my first full week back in motion. As I’ve stepped through each day, I’m grateful to be back on my...

A Year in the Making

A Year in the Making

I woke up this morning and the first thing I heard was a sleepy, yet smiley “Happy Anniversary.” It’s the way our relationship is: full of great tenderness. We spent this past weekend at the College Club of Boston where we got married last year. With great affection (and a lot less stress) we remembered the holiday lights on our walk to Quincy Market the night before the ceremony, encountering the Santa Speedo Run on the way back from the hair salon, engaging in moments of nervousness leading up to the big event, and having fun at the reception as everyone began to dance and mingle. In...
